There’s such a subtle difference between this quote and the idea of “YOLO!” and I really like that difference.
Perhaps we do not INDULGE every call that excites us, but what happens when we RESPOND to each? If I want to visit a far away place, I should not drop everything and create chaos to do so; but if I respond to that call, perhaps I get a post card from that place, and I hang it on my wall. I make sacrifices and I work hard for a year or two, plan ahead and change my life to make it happen. Or, perhaps I want to change everything about my life and make a dramatic career change. What happens if I give this idea serious thought? Perhaps, after much thought I decide this is not a good choice for me, however, having discovered this new passion and my interest in it, I can find a different way to incorporate it in my life; perhaps as a hobby, a volunteer position, etc. Even if we do NOT make drastic changes when our spirit is excited by some new call, by giving it serious thought, by actually examining this passion, by treating it as though it is something possible and within reach, we are changing our brains. We are learning new things about ourselves. Even if we respond to this call which excites us, and shortly thereafter find ourselves merely rejecting a foolish pipe dream, that is still a response.
